Description
Amantrel drug is used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Amantadine HCl, the active ingredient, is an antiviral drug that inhibits viruses’ actions in the body. It is also used in the treatment and prevention of Influenza A, which is a viral infection. However, Amantadine HCl is not recommended in some flu seasons as some flu strains may be resistant to this drug. This medicine is prescribed in treating Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson’s like stiffness and shaking that certain drugs may induce. It is also used as an antiviral drug. No dominant mechanism of action of Amantadine HCl is established till now. There are various pathways through which the drug exhibits antiviral and anti-parkinsonian activity. For the treatment of Parkinson’s symptoms, the drug is known to induce dopamine and epinephrine release.
Product Description
Do not take this drug if you are allergic to Amantadine HCL, are pregnant, are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, have narcolepsy, an enlarged prostate, have urinary problems, or severe bladder infection. Pre-inform your doctor about serious kidney problems, liver disease, serious heart complaints, or have intolerances to some sugars like lactose intolerance. Too much of the drug may cause serious side effects like too much muscle stiffness etc. You may require urgent medical help in this situation. In such a case, visit the nearest healthcare centre or immediately call your doctor. Some drugs that can interact with Amantadine HCl include Atropine, Dicyclomine, Glycopyrrolate, Hyoscyamine, Mepenzolate, Propantheline, Methscopolamine, Scopolamine, Quinine, Quinidine, a Diuretic, or Phenothiazines. However, these are not the only medicines that can interact with Amantadine HCl. There may be others as well. Inform your doctor about all other medicines and related products you may be using. Never start a new medication without speaking to your doctor.
Side Effects
Amantrel 100 mg capsules can cause some rare but serious side effects such as purplish-red blotchy spots on the skin, swelling of the ankles and feet, difficulty in urinating, vision changes, shortness of breath, mood, and behaviour changes (depression, suicidal thoughts or attempt, compulsive behaviour like gambling urges), muscle stiffness, uncontrolled muscle movements, unusual sweating, or seizures.
The side effects mentioned above are not the only ones you may experience or witness due to Amantadine HCl. If you get any serious side effects due to this medication, contact your doctor immediately.
How to Use
The generally recommended dosage is one time in a day. Always take the drug dose as prescribed by the doctor only. Never change the dosage, start, or stop using the drug without a doctor’s permission. Always complete the dose. Swallow the capsule with one glass full of water. Do not break the capsule. Take the drug exactly as directed. This drug should be combined with a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. It is best to take this medicine with food. If you take this medicine for Influenza A, start taking it 24 to 48 hours after flu symptoms begin. Follow your doctor’s directions carefully. Take the capsule at the same time each day, to avoid forgetting the dose. This should become a habit for you to take the capsule until the doctor tells you to stop the drug. Amantadine HCl controls Parkinson’s disease symptoms but does not cure it. It may take several months before you start noticing the full benefit of this drug.
