Dapsone 100mg Tablet

Take special care with Dapsone 100 mg, and let your doctor know if you suffer from other blood disorders or heart or lung problems. Please, let your doctor know if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicine, including medicines obtained without a prescription, especially rifampicin, trimethoprim, and probenecid.

If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, your doctor may be asked you to take folic acid supplements. Dapsone can appear in breast milk. A report of anaemia in infants breastfed by mothers taking Dapsone tablets has been reported.

Before you take Dapsone tablets, tell your doctor if you:

• Allergic to Dapsone, any of the other ingredients in the tablet, or similar medicines such as sulfonamide or sulfone. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include a rash, difficulty breathing, itching, and swelling of the lips, throat, or tongue.
• Have porphyria
• Suffer from severe glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. This can cause episodes of anaemia after eating certain foods such as fava beans.

Like all medicines, Dapsone 100 mg tablets can cause side effects, particularly when you start taking them, although not everyone who takes them gets them. Please let your doctor know if you notice any of the following:

• Effects on your leprosy – If you have been receiving Dapsone for leprosy and your condition does not improve, or you experience nerve damage, talk to your doctor.

Let your doctor know if you notice any often the following side effects:

— Anaemia, changes in the type and number of other blood cells

— Tingling, burning, or redness of the skin

— Headache, difficulty sleeping, nerve damage which may cause tingling in your arms or legs and weakness

— Inflammation of the liver, loss of appetite, feeling or being sick

— Fast heartbeat, jaundice, mental disturbances, change in liver function tests

— If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor.

Always take Dapsone tablets exactly as your doctor has prescribed you. Please check with your doctor if you have any doubts about the usage. Swallow the tablets with some water.

For adults and children over twelve years:

The usual dose for Multibacillary leprosy is 100 mg daily for at least two years.

The usual dose for paucibacillary leprosy is 100 mg daily for at least six months.

For malaria prevention, the recommended dose is 100 mg weekly with 12.5 mg of pyrimethamine.

For dermatitis herpetiformis – Initially, 50 mg daily, which may be gradually increased to 300 mg, then your doctor may gradually decrease your dose to the maintenance dose.

For pneumocystis carinii pneumonia- In combination with trimethoprim, 50 to 100 mg daily or 100 mg twice daily weekly.

People with damaged liver may receive a lower dose.
