Description
Intalith CR 450 is a prescription medicine containing the active ingredient, Lithium carbonate, the mood-stabilizing agent used as monotherapy:
— For short-term treatment of people seven years of age and older with manic and mixed episodes that occur with bipolar I disorder.
— For maintenance treatment of bipolar, I disorder in people seven years of age and older
It is unknown whether lithium carbonate tablets are safe and effective for children seven years of age with bipolar disorder.
Product Description
Do not take Intalith CR 450 mg if any of the following applies to you:
- Are allergic to lithium or any other ingredients of the medicine
- Have a serious kidney disorder
- Have problems with the rhythm of your heart
- Have low sodium levels in your body. This could occur if you are dehydrated, on a low-sodium diet, or have an illness called Addison’s disease.
- Are breastfeeding
Talk to your doctor before taking Lithium carbonate tablets if you have any of the following problems:
- Have epilepsy and take medicines to treat it
- Have heart disease
- Take antipsychotic medicine
- Have developed persistent headaches or visual disturbances
- Have a low amount of potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the blood. Your doctor will inform you about this.
Patients with severe kidney problems who have received lithium for more than ten years may risk developing a benign or malignant kidney tumour.
Your doctor will tell you whether lithium carbonate tablets are safe or not. Do not discontinue treatment without discussing it with your doctor. Let your doctor know of especially:
- Antipsychotic drugs
- Fentanyl
- Tryptophan
- Buspirone
- St John’s Wort
- Tramadol
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Medicines for migraine headaches called triptans
- Fentanyl
- Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
- MAOIs
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
Your doctor can tell you if it is safe to take lithium carbonate tablets with other medicines. Do not start and stop taking medicine without talking to your doctor.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of Intalith CR 450 mg include the following:
- Increased thirst
- Nausea
- Generic discomfort when you start treatment
- Excessive urination
- Hand trembling

How to Use
Always take Intalith CR tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor if you have any doubts about the usage of the medicine. When initiating treatment with lithium carbonate, usually taken twice daily, but when your blood tests are stable, you may be able to take it once daily. Your doctor will conduct a blood test to tell you how many tablets to take and when to take them. Your doctor will repeat the blood test regularly while receiving Lithium carbonate tablets. The medicine should not be used on children.
Contact your doctor immediately if you take more Intalith tablets than you should. Taking too many tablets includes nausea, loss of appetite, blurred vision, diarrhoea, sickness, lightheadedness, muscle twitching, passing a lot of water, muscle weakness, tiredness, and tremor.
