Allium cepa extract, Allantoin is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient present in Mederma Gel. Mederma is topical skincare for scars and contains Cepalin, a proprietary botanical extract, used to help improve the appearance of scars. This drug consists of Allium Cepa Extract, Allantoin. This medicine contains a botanical extract called Cepalin, which is derived from onions and contains allantoin, which is a naturally produced chemical found in many plants, including comfrey. A scar is the visible result of wound repair and is made up of fibrous tissue (fibroblast cells and fibrous proteins like keratin) that replaces normal tissue after an injury to heal an open wound. Onion extract present in this medicine provides a natural antioxidant that contributes to the healing process of the scar formation. Allantoin in this medicine is a keratolytic agent that softens keratin found in the epidermis and stimulates the growth of new and healthy tissue.

Mederma is safe and well-tolerated by most of the people who used it. But if you are allergic to it then avoid using it and consult your doctor for an alternative drug. If you miss a dose of Mederma, then take it as soon as you remember. Never take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is almost up. Taking multiple doses at almost the same time can lead to excess medication in your body which can be harmful.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and rash are the common side effects of Mederma. If any of these effects are continuing for a longer time or worsen, contact your doctor immediately. Mederma rarely causes serious side effects such as hives, itching, swelling, skin irritation, and scar discoloration. How to Use
Use this drug by applying it evenly to your scar and gently rubbing into your scar. Apply this Gel for 3-4 times a day for 8 weeks on new scars and 3-6 months on existing scars. You can begin using this medication for Scars as soon as your wound has healed. It can also be used on older scars. This medication should not be used on open wounds. You should take the dose until you finish the prescription. Do not change the dose or stop it even if you feel better. You should complete the prescribed dose.
