Description
Ramistar H 2.5/12.5 mg containing Ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide is prescribed to treat essential hypertension in patients for whom this combination treatment is appropriate. It is not recommended as initial therapy. Patients in whom Ramipril and diuretic are initiated at the same time can develop a sudden drop in blood pressure or hypotension. In the treatment of hypertension, the goal of Remistar H therapy is not any a short-term reduction of blood pressure but also a sustained reduction of blood pressure levels to within normal range to reduce cardiovascular risk.
Product Description
Ramistar H 2.5/12.5 mg is contraindicated in the following situations:
— Patients are hypersensitive to Ramipril, hydrochlorothiazide, other ACE inhibitors, or other ingredients present in the formulation.
— Patients who have a history of angioedema
— In pregnant and breastfeeding women
This combination therapy is not recommended for children and adolescents below 18 years of age due to insufficient data available on the safety and effectiveness of this medicine. In older patients, 65 years and above, renal function at the beginning of treatment is recommended.
Treatment with Ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide requires regular monitoring of sodium, calcium, potassium, uric acid, and blood glucose. It is also recommended that the white blood cells (WBCs) count be monitored to permit the detection of possible leukopenia. More frequent monitoring is advised in patients.
Side Effects
The most frequent side effects of Ramistar H are headache, dizziness, and bronchitis. Nausea, taste change, and diarrhoea are also common with Ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide. Consult your doctor if any of these persist or become troublesome. Inform your doctor if you have a cough or throat irritation. You must drink plenty of water to reduce muscle weakness, dry mouth, or extreme thirst. Dizziness may occur due to a sudden drop in blood pressure but gets better with time.
How to Use
Ramistar H tablets have to be swallowed with a sufficient amount of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Dosing consideration for Ramistar H is as follows:
— Dosage should be individualized
— Ramistar H should not be used as an initial therapy
— The individual’s condition should determine the dose of this combination of medicine.
— While prescribing Ramistar H, special attention to dialysis patients should be given.
The usual dosage is 2.5 mg ramipril and 12.5 hydrochlorothiazide. Generally, it is recommended that the daily dose be given in the morning as a single dose.

Dose adjustment will be based on the doctor’s judgment on the severity of hypertension and other associated factors.
