    Description

Lotim 0.5% is an ophthalmic solution used to treat elevated pressure in the eye conditions of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes damage to the optic nerve due to abnormally elevated pressure in the eye due to poor drainage or aqueous humour (fluid in the eye that maintains normal pressure by its continuous flow). Lotim eye drops containing Timolol lower the pressure in the eye by decreasing the production of fluid called aqueous humour, which helps maintain normal pressure in the eyeball.

    Product Description

Lotim is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the medicine’s excipients. It should not be given to patients with reactive airway disease, including bronchial asthma; avoid taking this medicine in patients with sick sinus syndrome, cardiogenic shock, and uncontrolled heart failure.

To avoid contamination, the dropper should not touch any surface. The tip of the dropper should not come into contact with the eyes as this may cause injury to the eye. Patients should be instructed that if handled improperly, ophthalmic solutions can become contaminated by common bacteria known to cause ocular infection. Serious eye damage and subsequent vision loss may occur due to contaminated solutions. Cardiac failure should be adequately controlled before beginning therapy with Timolol. In patients with a history of severe cardiac disorder, signs of cardiac failure should be monitored closely, and pulse rates should be checked.

    Side Effects

Lotim is usually safe and well tolerated. The following side effects have been reported with ocular administration of this or other ophthalmic solutions containing timolol maleate. Signs and symptoms of ocular irritations include stinging, burning, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, dry eyes, and decreased corneal sensitivity. Other side effects include headache, fatigue, asthenia, chest pain,  alopecia, worsening of psoriasis, nausea, diarrhoea, depression, insomnia, dizziness, and decreased libido.

    How to Use

The usual starting dose of Timolol is one drop of 0.25% in the affected eyes twice a day. If the clinical response is inadequate, the dosage may be changed to one drop of 0.5% solution in the affected eyes two times a day. If needed, concomitant therapy with other agents for lowering intraocular pressure may be given with Lotim eye drops. The use of two beta-adrenergic blocking agents is not recommended. In some patients, the intraocular pressure lowering response to Timolol may require a few weeks to stabilize if the IOP is satisfactory. The dosage scheduled may be changed to one drop once daily in the affected eyes. If more than one topical ophthalmic agent is used, the drug should be administered at least five minutes apart.

Dosages above one drop of 0.5% timolol twice a day generally have not been shown to produce further reduction in IOP. If the patient’s IOP is still unsatisfactory on this regimen, concomitant treatment can be introduced with other agents to reduce IOP. The co-administration of two topical beta-adrenergic agents is not suggested.
