Potassium citrate tablets are contraindicated in patients suffering from delayed gastric emptying and intestinal obstruction. This medicine should not be used in patients with peptic ulcer disease, active urinary tract infection, and renal insufficiency.

You must let your health care specialist know if you are allergic to any other medicines or if you develop allergies while taking this drug. The symptoms of a drug allergy include swelling of the face/lips/throat/tongue, breathing difficulties, or widespread itchy rashes. Also, before starting the treatment, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding during treatment.

In patients with impaired mechanisms for excreting potassium, Portrate administration can cause hyperkalemia (abnormally high levels of potassium in the bloodstream) and cardiac arrest. The use of Portrate in patients with chronic renal failure or other conditions impairing potassium excretion, such as severe heart damage or heart failure, should be avoided. If there is severe vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, or abdominal pain, potassium citrate should be discontinued immediately, and the possibility of bowel obstruction.

Some patients may develop minor gastrointestinal complaints such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or loose bowel movements. Most of these side effects may be alleviated by taking the dose with meals or snacks or reducing the dosage. Stop taking medicine and check with your doctor if you develop serious side effects such as black tarry stools, severe diarrhea, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, and confusion.

The dose for this medicine will be different for different individuals. Follow doctor’s orders when it comes to taking this medicine. The amount of the medicine and the length of time you take medicine depend on the medical condition. Usually, it is best to take medicine with food to avoid stomach discomfort. Do not stop treatment before the prescribed time. Also, patients should know of the following:

— Take each dose by crushing, chewing, or sucking the tablet.

— To take it as directed. This is especially important if the patient also takes digitalis preparations and diuretics.

— Check with your healthcare provider immediately if dark/tarry stools or other evidence of gastrointestinal bleeding is noticed.
