Do not take Unicontin tablets if you are allergic to theophylline, or any other medicine ingredients, or have rare blood pigments. Take special care while taking theophylline drug if you have a stomach ulcer, a viral infection, stomach ulcer, an overactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, seizures, or are unwell with a high fever. Tell your doctor if you are taking diuretics, oral contraceptives, carbimazole, St. John’s Wort, cimetidine, fluconazole, rifampicin, ritonavir, clarithromycin, etc. Also, let your doctor know about any operation you are going to have, or recently have a flu injection. Your doctor should be aware of all your medications, including those you are taking over the counter.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of Unicontin controlled release tablet include headache, nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset. If any of these bothers you or become serious, inform your doctor straight away. There may be ways to reduce their severity or resolve them completely. Usually, patients are advised not to consume alcohol or not smoke while receiving the treatment. One must also avoid drinks and beverages that contain high caffeine as such products enhance the drug’s side effects.
All medicines can cause allergic reactions, although serious allergic reactions are rare with Unicontin tablets. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop breathing difficulties, sudden wheeziness, swelling of face/lips/eyelids, rash, or itching.
How to Use
Take Unicontin in the evening after consuming food. Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of the treatment, so it is always best to take the tablet as your doctor has told you. Swallow the tablet a glass full of water. Avoid chewing or crushing them. Theophylline tablet is specially formulated to work properly over twelve hours. Crushing or chewing the tablet may cause rapid release of the tablet into your body. The situation can be dangerous and cause serious complications. The usual dose of the treatment depends on how you respond to the treatment. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dose per the patient’s condition. If you are an elderly patient, your doctor may suggest a lower dose. Kids below the age of six years can take these tablets.
